TM EARTH CAMP 2013 MARKS 4th YEAR OF TM – MNS ‘GREEN’ COLLABORATION
Both parties collaborate for the fourth consecutive year of environmental camp series
Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM) and the Malaysian Nature Society (MNS) today agreed to continue the collaboration between both parties in organising TM’s nationwide series of environmental camps fondly known as ”TM Earth Camp” for 2013, marking the fourth year of the partnership. This was signified with a signing ceremony between both parties held at Rimba Ilmu, University of Malaya today.
TM Earth Camp is a series of specially designed 3-day 2-night nature camp programme for students who are members of Kelab Pencinta Alam (KPA) at their schools nationwide, aimed at increasing environmental awareness in Malaysia's rich natural surroundings. A total of six (6) camps have been planned, which will be organised according to zones – Northern, Southern, Central, Eastern, Sabah and Sarawak.
At the signing ceremony, TM was represented by Dato’ Sri Zamzamzairani Mohd Isa, Group Chief Executive Officer, TM while Prof. Dr. Maketab Mohamed, President of MNS signed the agreement on behalf of MNS. The signing ceremony was witnessed by Dato’ Sri Dr Halim Shafie, Chairman of TM. Also present at the event were I.S Shanmugaraj, Head, Environment Education MNS, Shah Redza, Executive Director of MNS, Prof. Dr. Ahmad Ismail, Vice President and Advisor to the Environmental Education Division MNS and Izlyn Ramli, Vice President, Group Corporate Communications, TM.
Speaking at the event, Dato’ Sri Dr Halim shared, “The previous instalment of TM Earth Camp had shown a commendable achievement of its own when it recorded an increase of 10.3% in terms of the programme’s reach, not only amongst the participants, but also the community members that it had touched. It is essential for TM to ensure that the objectives of the nature camp are met successfully with enhanced implementation and with greater impact to all who will be involved.”
“It is also good to note that the established relationship among the participants continues to grow even after the programme has ended. They get connected through Facebook groups, where they not just share and view pictures taken during the camp as well as strengthen the bonds among them, but also to discuss and share their views on environmental activities and issues. This is the impact that we are actually aiming for, hence maintaining the sustainability of the programme and I hope this will be taken further in the 2013 TM Earth Camp.”
Meanwhile, Prof. Dr. Maketab said, “KPA or Nature Club is an iconic collaboration programme between MNS and Ministry of Education. But without the financial assistance from the corporate sector such as TM, it is impossible for MNS to organise specific programmes for the KPA on our own.”
“Participation from the students, regardless of their level, is essential in ensuring the sustainability of the Mother Nature. We are grateful with the support that we receive from TM which has greatly assist MNS in terms of financial and manpower towards encouraging more students to join us in the mission of embracing, appreciating and conserving our rich biodiversity and highly valuable environment here in Malaysia,” he added.

TM Earth Camp Borneo Zone (Sarawak) : 3 – 5 May 2013 Taman Negara Niah, Sarawak
TM Earth Camp Southern Zone: 14 – 16 June 2013 Pusat Pendidikan Alam Sekitar ecoCare, Kerteh, Terengganu
TM Earth Camp Eastern Zone: 28 – 30 June 2013 Pulau Tali Kail, Grik, Perak
TM Earth Camp Northern Zone: 5 – 7 July 2013 Taman Alam Kuala Selangor, Selangor
TM Earth Camp Borneo Zone (Sabah): August 2013 Kem Biro Tatanegara, Kundasang, Sabah
TM Earth Camp Central Zone: August 2013 Taman Lipur Lagenda, Gunung Ledang, Johor
Besides carrying the objectives of increasing environmental awareness through more intensive activities held throughout the camps, TM Earth Camp this year will also have a different feel with the ‘cross-zone’ approach. Under this approach, instead of organising the camp in the state according to its respective zone, the camps are to be hosted outside of their own zones. This is to inculcate further appreciation of the rich diversity of Malaysia’s nature and ecology, as well as the various cultures and community practices, particularly on environment preservation.
At the same event, in addition to the agreement signing, TM has proven that the green message has been spread out in an encouraging way with the voluntary commitment from TM’s higher education institutions, Multimedia College (MMC) and Multimedia University (MMU) to be part of MNS’ latest programme in Environment Education, KPA for Youth. KPA MMC/MMU will be registered with MNS’ KPA for Youth and the club will receive various membership benefits, such as volunteering opportunities with MNS, support and awareness programmes for the members of the club and many more. In return, MNS will provide KPA MMC/MMU access to their programmes, locally and internationally, including a tree-planting programme. MNS presented 2 trees to the club at the event as a symbolic gesture to kick-off its participation in future Environmental Education and tree planting activities.
Commenting on this, Dato’ Sri Halim said, “This is a perfect complement to TM Earth Camp in terms of continuity of influence and involvement of the young generation in environmental conservation. BumiKu has now developed into a holistic programme by itself, covering all levels with substantial impact to what we believe in – the preservation of Mother Nature.”

About Malaysian Nature Society (MNS)
MNS, a membership-based Society was established in 1940 with the mission “promote the conservation of Malaysia’s natural heritage”. MNS currently has over 3,000 members, 14 volunteer-run Branches and a full time Secretariat based in Kuala Lumpur.
