IKEA “Love the Earth Project”

11 Jun 2010

It is estimated that around 500 billion plastic bags are used worldwide annually and they are damaging our environment and a major contributor to massive landfills. Plastic bags take around 300 years to photo degrade and they break down into tiny toxic particles that contaminate the soil and waterways. Marine animals and creatures are hurt and killed every day by discarded plastic bags as plastic clogs their intestines and results in slow starvation while others become entangled in plastic bags and drown.

As part of IKEA Malaysia’s commitment to be an environmentally responsible company, they are taking a stand to stop plastic bag waste. MNS is proud to partner with IKEA on their “Love The Earth” Campaign. IKEA has embarked on a green campaign where they no longer offer free plastic bags to their customers. With the goal of reducing the waste inherited from our plastic bag consumption and to contribute in reducing the overall litter that is strangling our earth, IKEA will no longer be offering customers free plastic bags  Plastic bags are retailed at 10 cents or 20 cents depending on their size and proceeds from this will be channeled to MNS.

The Campaign stated on 5 June 2009 commemorating World Environment Day, IKEA encourages the use of reusable bags when customers shop at the IKEA store. Customers may bring their own reusable bags, or purchase IKEA’s iconic reusable 'Big Blue Bag' for RM1.90, reduced from the current price of RM3.90.  The sturdy reusable bag can replace hundreds of single-use bags and IKEA hopes customers will bring it along to carry purchases when they shop at IKEA and elsewhere.

IKEA-MNS “LOVE THE EARTH” Project

The IKEA-MNS partnership has resulted in a Climate Change Programme, the “IKEA LOVE THE EARTH” project.  This project will see IKEA and MNS embarking on a mangrove tree-planting and monitoring programme, promoting its awareness and the necessity of climate change practices  that will leave a long lasting and profound impact on the environment.

Mangrove trees are well known for their high carbon absorption and storage capacity of carbon dioxide.  Mangrove forests serve many purposes including providing habitat to many species, acting as nursery grounds, as wave buffers against tsunamis and torrential storms, protecting coral reefs and seagrass beds from sedimentation and man-made events.   The rapid decline of mangroves could have potential consequences on the atmospheric composition and the climate.
