ecoCare Environmental Education Centre

10 Jan 2017

Conservation of our natural heritage and environmental education are the main thrust of the two inter-related environmental initiatives undertaken by Petronas Chemical Group (PCG) together with the Malaysian Nature Society (MNS). The initiatives – the Kerteh River Mangrove Rehabilitation Project and the establishment of the Environmental Education Centre or ecoCare Centre (EEC) in Kerteh. The mangrove rehabilitation project started in October 2005 and the ecoCare centre building has been officially launched by our DYMM Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin, Sultan Terengganu on 20th November 2013.

The ecoCare centre is managed by the Malaysian Nature Society with the support of Optimal (our former funder) and Petronas Chemical Group. The project is a long term commitment in terms of conservation, awareness, restoration and education along the Kerteh River together with the involvement from the local communities. Being the 1st environmental education centre in the East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia, EEC will feature displays, exhibits and information relating to the Kerteh River ecosystem and Kerteh’s unique coastal terrain and biodiversity. It will also serve as a resource centre with facilities to promote awareness and understanding of environmental conservation amongst schoolchildren, teachers and the community. The structure of the ecoCare centre follows the local Terengganu house and its concept is environmentally friendly of course.

Our centre is near to the Kerteh River which is surrounded with beautiful mangrove forest. You can find variety of birds and small animals. Hence, EEC provides a lot of nature-based activities such as mangrove replanting, river cruises, guided tours, mangrove seedling collecting, fire-fly or bird watching programmes, night walks, nature crafts and indoor games. Turtle sanctuary activities and forest ecology activities will also be provided upon request and availability.

You can choose to stay in EEC if you feel that a day visit is insufficient as EEC also provides accommodation and food at affordable prices. EEC has 14 units of dorms with shared bathrooms in each dorm that can allocate 140 pax (maximum). As EEC concept is close to nature and to reduce any waste into the environment, we use the rain harvest tank. The design structure of the centre which follows the local houses in Terengganu provides us a breezy and natural air condition in each dorm hence there is no need for air conditioning units. Other facilities that are available in the centre are watching tower, resource centre, exhibition hall, seminar hall, dining hall, kitchen, prayer room, car park, guard house and cafeteria EEC.

EEC is open from 9.00 am to 5.30 pm daily, 7 days per week.
