MNS 70th anniversary and fundraising dinner

10 Sep 2010

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian Nature Society (MNS) is holding a two-day international conference and a fund-raising royal dinner to mark its 70th anniversary.
The conference entitled Challenges and Solutions For Tropical Biodiversity will be held on Oct 8 and 9 at the DoubleTree Hilton KL hotel as part of 31 activities for this year to celebrate seven decades of MNS's contribution to the conservation of Malaysia's natural heritage.

The MNS 70th anniversary organising committee chairman Tan Sri Ahmad Mustaffa Babjee said at a press conference at DoubleTree Hilton that the impact and importance of biodiversity had not been well understood.

"There will be prominent international participants who will be presenting papers at the conference," he said.

Among them are Dr Marco Lambertini of BirdLife International and professor Yongbae Suh of Seoul National University.

"The first day of the conference will be focusing on a global and regional outlook on biodiversity, while the second day will examine the actions and plans that can be put into place to preserve biodiversity," Ahmad Mustaffa said.

According to MNS, tropical biodiversity continues to be assaulted by a host of threats including climate change.

Malaysia has been identified as the top country in Asia with the highest number of threatened species and globally, the third following Ecuador and the United States.

The objectives of the conference were to review the current status and trends of Malaysia's tropical biodiversity and seek practical long-term solutions to prevent and halt its loss and degradation.

The recommendations from the conference will be presented to the government.

"The royal dinner on Oct 10 will be graced by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and Raja Permaisuri Agong. It is to raise funds for our new programme, Green Aid Fund," Ahmad Mustaffa added.

As seats are limited, those who want to register for the conference and the royal dinner can visit for more details.
